Utilizing Propane Storage Tanks

Typically, we will have one of these attached to our barbecue grill but there may also be times whenever we use them in order to provide heat for the home as well. There are also a number of different accessories that are available for these tanks, which can range anywhere from the valves all the way to nitrogen padding, which is used in special circumstances. Let’s talk a little bit about the propane storage tanks, and see how the different sizes work together with each other.

What is Propane?

Propane is an odorless gas that is a byproduct of oil production. As the oil is taken from its crude form into the usable form, it gives off propane, along with a number of other gases which are used for fuel. This makes propane somewhat of a limited resource, although there are some large tanks of propane that are available in the Midwest that are stored in salt mines. This is how we can have a seemingly unlimited supply of propane, even though there is only so much that is produced on a regular basis.

Propane Storage Tanks

Those underground propane storage tanks are huge, and there are plenty of them as well. On a regular basis, liquid propane is taken from those underground storage tanks to the intermediate storage tanks using either a pipeline or trucks from gas and electric providers. Most of the trucks contain 10,000 gallon tanks of propane, but these may also be utilized for more of a localized delivery service. Typically, it is these trucks that will take it to the smaller 2 or 3000 gallon tanks that are available at your local supplier. From there, you will be able to fill your smaller tanks and take them home for use.

Propane Tank Accessories

Although most of these storage tanks are somewhat contained, there are also various accessories that are available for them as well.

For example, it is important to maintain the valves properly so that the tank does not develop a leak. For some purposes, such as for use in a hot air balloon, it may be necessary to use nitrogen padding in order to keep the pressure inside of the tank.

Because the temperatures can drop so rapidly at higher altitudes, having this nitrogen padding available can make it easier to maintain the pressure inside of the tank and keep the balloon aloft. It also helps balloon operators to avoid some of the more dangerous practices, such as subverting the tanks in hot water, or heating them with fire. Proper gas pressure guages should always be considered here.

Even though you may only see some of the smaller propane storage tanks, they certainly are available. The next time you get propane for use at your home, stop to think about some of the process of getting it from the underground storage to where it is located in your local area. Also consider some of the safety features and accessories that are available in order to provide us with a clean fuel that is somewhat inexpensive.

They are readily available at stores and home improvement centers. You can also talk with your local gas supplier for advice on a propane powered generator. Propane, known as the alternative fuel, is becoming more and more popular amongst householders today

Many home owners and individuals are turning to propane as an alternative fuel source. The use of propane has gained a lot of popularity over the years especially with the high price of electricity and other fuels.

Although the concept of going “green” is a good one it has not been perfected yet and remains expensive to use wind and solar power for home. It also does not work everywhere and becomes a matter of practicality.

The fact is that propane tanks come in many different sizes, small large and so on, and you will have to know your usage estimate before you lease or buy a a new or used propnane tank. A common size tank is 500 gallons but there are larger tanks if you are going to be using more fuel than just for the odd barbecue or are in a harsh and cold climate. Most likely you can lease any size tank for about one hundred dollars a month and but the same size tank for about a total cost of 1100 dollars. The choice will be up to you.

Most home owners store their propane tanks above ground. It is much easier and cheaper to do it this way then to have the expense of placing them underground. Many individuals then build a “closet” around their tank to make it look attractive and to place the tank out of sight. You will also have to use copper piping to run the propane from the tank to the house. This must be placed about two feet under the surface and 5/8 inch piping is generally used. Your gas supplier will do this work for you. Most suppliers charge by the foot to put in your propane gas line. You will also want to protect the area where your tank is stored. Easy access is important so that it may be filled without any interference.

Remember that you can only fill your tank to about eighty percent of capacity. You must leave room at the top of the tank for expansion. When you get below twenty percent of capacity you should have your tank refilled.

Here are some facts about propane and its uses

Propane is a gas that can be compressed into a liquid form for transportation. This three-carbon alkane is derived during the processing of oil or natural gas. Propane is a popular fuel for portable stoves, engines, barbecues and central heating systems.

Facts about Propane: Chemical Properties

The LPG or LP gas that we are conversant with, is a mixture propane, propylene, butylene and butane. The odor is emitted by ethanethiol, an additive to prevent wanton leakage.

Propane burns to form carbon dioxide and water, in the presence of excess oxygen. It is heavier than air and in the raw, unprocessed state, with a density of nearly 1.5 times that of air, propane sinks to the ground. Liquid propane evaporates at atmospheric pressure. Under proper combustion, propane produces 91 megajoules per cubic meter.

Physical Properties:

Propane is a three-carbon alkane, non-toxic in nature. When inhaled deliberately, it causes asphyxiation or oxygen deprivation. Commercial products that contain propane and hydrocarbons increase this risk. Propane is stored at room temperature, under pressure. The sudden expansion and cooling on release is known to cause frostbite. Propane combustion is clean and the C-C bonds, along with those of propylene and butylene, generate organic exhaust. Propane burns with a clear, visible flame.

Propane Facts:

Propane was first identified by Dr. Walter Snelling, in 1910. Dr. Snelling worked with liquefied gas and discovered that a bottle full of propane was sufficient to light a home for three weeks!

He invented ways to liquefy the LP gas while refining of natural oil. His production of pure propane in 1911 was issued a patent. Propane is a commonly preferred cooking fuel, also used in vehicles. It’s low boiling point of −43.6F enables a vaporization on release, rendering it safe for transportation and as a compressant within pressurized containers.

This property eliminates the need for a vaporizing device. It fuels forklifts, locomotives and heavy ice resurfacing machines. It also powers water heaters and other heating appliances. Commercially marketed propane fuel contains 90% propane and 10% butane, propylene and odorants.

The fuel propane is transported via large tanks and service trucks.

It is compressed within cylinders or transported from the excavation site via a pipeline to the nearest delivery plant. Consumers get their supply of the fuel in individual tanks of varying sizes. Propane heaters are quickly replacing traditional ones fueled by fossil fuel. Industries are now using propane in brick kilns, glass manufacturing units and similar industries that use heat-blasts.

Propane blends with isopropane to fuel a refrigerator that works on gas absorption. The mixture has a greatly reduced ozone depletion effect and successfully replaces chlorofluorocarbon and hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants. This ability makes it a great replacement as an alternative fuel in refrigerators and air conditioners.

Propane is the third choice in vehicle fuels, after gasoline and diesel. The autogas vehicles make optimum use of propane in the liquid state.

Quicker refills, increased cost effectiveness and cleaner handling makes it a popular choice. The fuel is a byproduct of two natural gas processing and refining of petroleum.

It involves removal of butane and large amounts of ethane, alongside propane. Oil refineries also produce propane while processing ‘crack’ petroleum.

Propane gas helps to save a lot on energy bills. It is not only cleaner than most other fuels, but also one of the most environment friendly source of energy. It is recognized within the ‘Clean Air Act Amendments’ of 1990.
