Typically, we will have one of these attached to our barbecue grill but there may also be times whenever we use them in order to provide heat for the home as well. There are also a number of different accessories that are available for these tanks, which can range anywhere from the valves all the way to nitrogen padding, which is used in special circumstances. Let’s talk a little bit about the propane storage tanks, and see how the different sizes work together with each other.

What is Propane?

Propane is an odorless gas that is a byproduct of oil production. As the oil is taken from its crude form into the usable form, it gives off propane, along with a number of other gases which are used for fuel. This makes propane somewhat of a limited resource, although there are some large tanks of propane that are available in the Midwest that are stored in salt mines. This is how we can have a seemingly unlimited supply of propane, even though there is only so much that is produced on a regular basis.

Propane Storage Tanks

Those underground propane storage tanks are huge, and there are plenty of them as well. On a regular basis, liquid propane is taken from those underground storage tanks to the intermediate storage tanks using either a pipeline or trucks from gas and electric providers. Most of the trucks contain 10,000 gallon tanks of propane, but these may also be utilized for more of a localized delivery service. Typically, it is these trucks that will take it to the smaller 2 or 3000 gallon tanks that are available at your local supplier. From there, you will be able to fill your smaller tanks and take them home for use.

Propane Tank Accessories

Although most of these storage tanks are somewhat contained, there are also various accessories that are available for them as well.

For example, it is important to maintain the valves properly so that the tank does not develop a leak. For some purposes, such as for use in a hot air balloon, it may be necessary to use nitrogen padding in order to keep the pressure inside of the tank.

Because the temperatures can drop so rapidly at higher altitudes, having this nitrogen padding available can make it easier to maintain the pressure inside of the tank and keep the balloon aloft. It also helps balloon operators to avoid some of the more dangerous practices, such as subverting the tanks in hot water, or heating them with fire. Proper gas pressure guages should always be considered here.

Even though you may only see some of the smaller propane storage tanks, they certainly are available. The next time you get propane for use at your home, stop to think about some of the process of getting it from the underground storage to where it is located in your local area. Also consider some of the safety features and accessories that are available in order to provide us with a clean fuel that is somewhat inexpensive.

Gas camping stoves come in basically three different categories: multi-burner family camping stoves, single burner backpacking , and expedition stoves.

Outdoor Camping Stove Fuels – Each has its advantages and disadvantages

Most have the same basic design of a burner or burners attached to a fuel source. Your intended use will determine which stove and fuel type is the best choice. If you do some car camping and have little room extra and need to heat up a can of chili from time to time then a single burner propane stove may be the way to go. Maybe even a can of sterno if money and space is tight.

Fuel Types

Understand the pros and cons of the different types of fuel, which are liquid fuel and pressurized gas canisters. I personally recommend only two real choices – Coleman style screw on propane canisters or white gas -Coleman liquid fuel.

The most popular fuel source is white gas, which performs well in all weather conditions. White gas is readily available all over but may not be outside the U.S

White Gas Stoves

The white gas stoves will produce the most heat of any outdoor camping stove. The white gas stoves now come in “dual fuel” versions. This allows you to use unleaded auto gas in addition to the white gas. A lot of people use the auto gas and are happy with it. Nevertheless it is smelly and if you spill it on something or get it on your hands, it’s hard to get rid of the odor.

I recommend using only the white gas in the dual fuel stoves. If you run out and can’t buy any white gas – then use the unleaded gasoline. The main advantage of using unleaded gasoline over white gas is cost. This is the only advantage to the dual fuel stoves. I feel the extra cost for the few gallons of white gas used each year is worth paying so you get the cleanliness of this fuel.

Pressurized Gas – Propane, Butane

The next most popular fuel source is propane gas canisters. If simplicity of use is your main concern use a pressurized gas stove. The fuel is made from blends of butane and other gases. Gas canisters are not refillable and must be thrown away when empty. You cannot check to see how much fuel is left in the canister when using pressurized gas. When using white gas, it is easy to check remaining fuel.

Pressurized gas stoves can be lit as soon as the fuel canister is in place. No pumping, priming, preheating the burner.

Liquid white gas burns hotter than the “propane – butane” gas and works better in windy, cold and low atmospheric conditions therefore it is the primary fuel for most expedition stoves. Most often it is lighter and cheaper to use liquid fuel than gas fuel due to the gas canister being heavier and has to be purchased each time. Liquid fuel does not burn as cleanly as gas and is more difficult to regulate the temperature. As for as transporting it’s somewhat safer to carry a gas canister in the trunk of your car than a bottle of white gas.

One last note: Make sure you know how to use your outdoor camping stove before going camping, use it at home instead of waiting until you’re in the field.

The easiest grill to use is probably the natural gas grill. It is hooked to your homes natural gas line and therefore doesn’t require you to buy large propane tanks on a regular basis. Getting a grill that has a battery powered or electric starter makes things even easier.

Propane is probably the next easiest to use since there are no charcoal briquettes or wood chips to worry about. While it seems that a larger grill is a better grill, remember that larger also means a larger area to clean.

Natural gas or propane grills can offer additional cook spaces that a charcoal or smoker unit cannot. If you plan to cook full meals on your grill, gas burners and a warming tray come in handy. A rotisserie option may also be important to you depending on what you want to grill.

Fueling up can be an issue. You will likely have to make note of each gas station that has propane, not all of them do. If your goal is simply to save a little money then propane may be a great option for you. However, if you wish to make a difference on a global scale then a hybrid or flex fuel may be preferable. Do your research on all fuel types so you know what you’re really dealing with. Information is a major component of going green.
